THE SOCIETY - Maradhu Island Community

Religion and Beliefs

Islam is the official religion of Maradhu Island as in all the other islands of the Republic of Maldives. To be a Maldivian is to be a Muslim and it is an integral part of  the daily life of all Maldivians.

Superstitious Beliefs

Superstition had been an outstanding component of the Maldivian culture and it was so in Maradhu island as well. This is for the most part due to the very nature of the islands and its society. However with the introduction of modern medicine and rapid evolution of the social development towards globalization has left many people of this belief in doubt and seems to be fading away from the society altogether.

Language

Dhivehi of Addu dialect is the language spoken in  Maradhu island. Addu dialect is spoken only in Addu atoll in Maldives and is unique from the language which the Maldivians of other atolls speak. Divehi is only spoken in the Maldives, and belongs to the Indo-European family of languages.

Food platter

The staple food of Maradhu Island is fish, coconuts, rice, tubers, millet and breadfruit.

Maradhu island has very limited cultivable land. Therefore the traditional fare was fairly basic, consisting mainly of fish and coconuts. The improvements and improvisation  of transport mechanism between Male' and Maradhu island led a significant impact on modern food platter which these days consists of varieties of local short eats and pastries, in addition to various types of fish vegetable and meat curries.
